Sustaining Effective Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalitions
The Priority
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC), a member of the Comprehensive Cancer Control National Partnership (CCCNP), provides funding to support comprehensive cancer control (CCC) coalitions across the country through the National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program. Comprehensive cancer control is an approach that brings together partners to collectively address a community’s cancer burden in a much more impactful way than any one organization could accomplish alone. The approach relies heavily upon the willingness of organizations to work together to establish priorities for addressing the community’s cancer burden and strategically present these in a coordinated cancer control plan. The plan is intended to be more than a “document on a shelf,” but rather it is a blueprint for expected action that includes specific partner commitments to plan implementation. A well-functioning CCC coalition is integral to the successful implementation of a cancer plan’s priorities.
To help maintain and sustain CCC coalitions, the CCCNP has prioritized initiatives that focus on assisting coalitions to achieve a high level of effectiveness in their efforts. By providing and coordinating technical assistance and training among National Partners, the CCCNP seeks to assist coalitions throughout the nation to successfully develop, update, implement, and evaluate their cancer control plans.
What We Do
The CCCNP seeks to assist cancer coalitions throughout the nation to successfully develop, update, implement, and evaluate their cancer control plans by providing coordinated technical assistance and training at the national level. We recognize that a greater focus on addressing the underlying social determinants of health (SDOH)— the conditions in which we are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age—is required to accelerate progress against cancer and advance health equity, a state in which every person has the opportunity to attain their highest level of health. The CCCNP strives to utilize a health equity lens when planning, designing, and implementing all training and technical assistance efforts.
To achieve this, the CCCNP Sustaining Coalitions Workgroup disseminates and provides technical assistance on the Nine Habits of Successful Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalitions. This guide includes information on the attributes of high performing CCC coalitions, real life experiences of CCC coalitions, self-assessments for each habit, and tools and guidance to apply and incorporate the habits in practice.
In addition, the Sustaining Coalitions Workgroup hosts regular CCC coalition and program leadership discussions in response to coalition leaders’ requests to have an informal virtual space to discuss successes, as well as exchange ideas and practices that may improve coalition functioning and sustainability of efforts. Each discussion focuses on one of the nine habits, such as coalition structure or diversified resources, or other relevant topics including CCC plan development, implementation, and coalition membership engagement. Additionally, the CCCNP hosts sessions focused on advancing CCC coalition efforts to address health disparities.

Coalition Check-Ins are informal, ½ hour video calls on a topic of interest to cancer coalition leaders. To kick off the call, one coalition comes prepared to share their experience on the topic, followed by organic, interactive discussion amongst all participants, facilitated by a member of the Comprehensive Cancer Control National Partnership.

Nine Habits of Successful Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalitions, 3rd Edition
The new third edition was revised to incorporate health equity principles and examples, across all the habits. The Guide was made possible through the collaboration of the CCCNP with leadership in development from Strategic Health Concepts and the American Cancer Society.
Cancer Plan Tip Sheets are offered through the CCCNP to assist cancer coalitions charged with developing, implementing, and evaluating cancer control plans tailored to their state/tribe/territory/jurisdiction. CCC plans focus coalition efforts on evidence-based interventions (EBIs) that impact cancer prevention and control across the cancer continuum. Each tip sheet focuses on a specific topic (e.g., colorectal cancer screening, tobacco control, risk factors for cancer survivors).
